National Science Foundation Case Study

Emerging Sun is supporting the National Science Foundation’s National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) to help the organization establish a new Program Management Office and implement project management principles, methodologies and best practices. Our senior resources provide significant depth to support NCSES in their critical task areas of schedule management, process improvement, data visualization, and performance metrics.

Emerging Sun’s resources are helping the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) and its scientists make a smooth and steady transition to adopt sound Project Management principles and practices. Using our Project Management framework, we are bringing leading practices to support NCSES in several critical task areas, including:

Project Management

Our resources are facilitating weekly status meetings, providing weekly status reports, using Microsoft Project to visually track progress, managing key schedule dependencies, and documenting tasks and action items from team discussions.

Integrated Master Schedule

We’ve created an Integrated Master Schedule (IMS) to help NCSES manage cross-project interdependencies into a single, actionable Project Plan. The IMS includes project scope, schedules, key deliverables, milestones and resources. Our team provides regular updates to the IMS through consultation with key project stakeholders.

Project Performance Metrics

Emerging Sun is helping NCSES maintain and monitor program reporting of project performance, developing a program dashboard with indicators of how well the portfolio is performing vs. pre-defined metrics. This provides transparency and early detection of problems to enable efficient resolution.
